As you may have very recently read, an apartment complex owner in North Omaha has made the news for receiving more than 1,000 code violations for unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including electrical problems and gas leaks. In light of these violations, 500 Myanmar refugees occupying the complex were displaced. In turn, the Omaha City Council’s planning committee have started talks on a potential landlord registry ordinance to ensure safe and sanitary housing for everyone. It is reported that the chairman of the committee is also open to “some other mechanism” to meet their goal.
