There are so many beautiful neighborhoods in Omaha, each with its own personality and style. The two neighborhoods we have covered thus far, Benson and Bemis Park, couldn’t be more different, each with its own rich history. The Gold Coast neighborhood is no different.
Gold Coast is considered as part of midtown, and extends from 36th to 40th Streets and Jones to Cuming Streets. It encompasses the newly updated Blackstone District and all of its shops.
The neighborhood first received its name due to the high concentration of high-value homes built from the 1880s to 1940s. The neighborhood was home to most of Omaha’s cultural and financial leaders from the 1900s to 1920s, and was considered a trendy hot spot during those times.
Most Gold Coast residents at that time commuted to their downtown offices by a long trolley ride, as the neighborhood was located in the country. It can be hard to imagine countryside around 40th and Dodge nowadays, as Omaha presently extends well past 200th Street.
The Gold Coast neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been since 1997. In addition to the neighborhood being considered a historic place, there are multiple historically significant landmarks within its boundaries, including: Joslyn Castle, Saunders School, St. Cecilia Cathedral, and multiple private residences. In fact, the northern section of 38th Street may be the only chunk of pre-World War I architect-designed homes left in Omaha. The rest of these houses have either been converted into apartments and businesses, or completely demolished.
To date, the neighborhood appears to be trying to conserve its historical significance. Many homeowners opt to restore their homes rather than remodel. Some housing styles that can be found throughout the neighborhood are Tudor Revival, Classical Revival, Italian Renaissance Revival, Victorian Eclectic, Prairie Style, and Jacobethan Revival.
As mentioned above, the Gold Coast includes all of the newly updated businesses in the Blackstone District and many other local businesses. Just a short walk from St. Cecilia Cathedral, you can get some of the best breakfast and baked goods in Omaha from Lisa’s Radial Cafe and Sweet Magnolia’s Bake Shop, respectively. It is also conveniently located between downtown and Dundee, and is very close to Midtown Crossing.
